The Inspiration & About Marvel’s Agatha All Along
Agatha All Along dropped just in time for witching season! Let me tell you, it’s definitely a show for the witches. So of course, I had to make a witches brew for this one.
Agatha All Along follows the once-powerful Agatha Harkness, on a journey to reclaim her power after it was stolen from the Scarlet Witch. An otherwise solitary witch, Agatha is forced to put together a last minute coven to go down The Witches Road—a legendary path that will present witches with what they’re missing…if they make it to the end.
A show about going on a challenging journey of trials to reclaim one’s power? Potion, protection, divination, and green witches? This is definitely something modern witches can all relate to! Pleasantly surprised by Agatha All Along, I wanted to make an authentic Witch’s Brew cocktail reflective of the story.
I’m really excited to see where the show goes. The second episode showcased amazing characters while maintaining a balance between dark witchy without going extreme or too light. It was the right amount of fantasy and a storyline with a connection to the Salem Witch trials, grounded humor and an occasionally jump scare.
You can get my full thoughts on the premiere from an advanced screening I went to here, on my new YouTube channel.
I may make another witches brew drink recipe towards the end of the season as more details reveal itself, but I was too excited to hold off on this one!
Let’s get into the ingredients you need & why I chose them for Agatha’s Witch’s Brew cocktail.
Ingredients for a Powerful Witch’s Brew Cocktail
As an actual witch, I wanted to make a witch’s brew drink that authentically reflected witchcraft (in addition to taking inspiration from the show). And in true potion witch fashion, it all came together in a perfect concoction – a drink for reclaiming one’s power and connecting to the witchcraft lineage. The ingredients I used and their meaning are below. It includes nonalcoholic substitutions, so you can enjoy a sans alcohol witches brew, if you so choose.
In this blog, I will talk about the magical folkloric associations of ingredients in witchcraft. The content on this website is provided for general informational and entertainment purposes only. While many people believe in these practices, witchcraft and metaphysics are not scientifically based. It is not intended as, nor should it be considered as any kind of medical claim and should never be used as a substitute for professional mental or medical care. Ingredients & Their Magical Meaning
- Blackberry. Blackberry is deeply intertwined with witchcraft. It expresses the sensual power of the path along with abundance, healing and protection. In western witchcraft, blackberry is associated with the goddess Brigid and the fae, healing, grounding, abundance, sensuality, and protection.
- Rosemary. At the start of Agatha All Along, Agatha is under a spell that causes her to forget who she is. An herb of remembrance (and popular in witchcraft), rosemary was the perfect addition to this witchs brew. This shrub is often used for the mind, mental powers, purification, and healing in metaphysics.
- Pomegranate. When it comes to the shadow side of witchcraft, pomegranate is one of my favorite ingredients. Not only is it associated with the goddess Persephone and featured on the High Priestess tarot card, but it can also be used as a magical ink or blood replacement. With plentiful seeds, it’s symbolic of abundance, fertility, and luck. So I thought it was another great ingredient for this witchs brew martini!
- Ginger. Since Agatha is on a journey to reclaim her power, ginger is the perfect touch. Associated with Mars and the element of fire, ginger is used in witchcraft for power. It is also associated with longevity, love, money, success, and just generally getting energy moving!
- Maple. I added maple for the tall powerful trees that shielded secret coven gatherings of old, and for earth Magick. Maple adds a subtle woodsy, grounding essence to this witches brew cocktail, and is associated with longevity, money and love.
- Lemon. Agatha is forced to form a coven to go down the Witch’s Road (and possibly make some friends). Lemon brings the brightness of joy and friendship, as well as cleansing to this witchy recipe. Plus, lemon is a citrus of the moon—a core element of witchcraft.

Alcohol-Specific Ingredients
For a witches brew alcoholic drink
Sloe Gin (& Substitutions)
Contrary to its name, sloe gin is actually a liqueur. Made with sloe berries, it comes from the sloe or blackthorn tree. Blackthorn is also a historical witchcraft ingredient, known as “dark mother of the woods” and associated with fairies, used in wands and divining rods, or hung over doorways to ward away negative energy and evil spirits. Alas, I found the perfect alcoholic witches brew recipe to incorporate this magical ingredient!
Substitutions
Since this is a specific ingredient, I tested some other options for you! You can either:
- do without the sloe gin, just be conscious of the sweetness – start with less and add more
- use curaçao (blue curaçao could give the drink a blue hue before addeing the purple edible)
Gin or Vodka
Gin helps uplift the fruity flavors of this witchs brew cocktail so that it maintains both its herbal and berry elements. Juniper is the defining ingredient of gin, and as such is associated with purification, psychic abilities, spirituality, and more. Since witchcraft (and presumably this show) is associated with summoning spirits and psychic abilities, I thought this would be a good choice of alcohol. You can also use vodka instead.
Absinthe (Optional Alcohol Ingredient)
Absinthe is totally an optional addition here. (If you don’t like anise flavors, I wouldn’t add it.) But since this is a witches brew drink, I just had to have it. Plus, it compliments the gin and herbal flavors!
Absinthe (also nicknamed the green fairy) is made from a combination of botanicals including wormwood, anise, fennel seeds, and more. In essence, its defining ingredients make it perfect a mystical drink associated with psychic vision and the unseen world.
NonAlcoholic Subtitutions
For a witches brew mocktail
The beauty of witchcraft is that it brings people from all walks of life. Plenty of people in my life are sober, so I always try to make nonalcoholic mocktail versions where I can.
- As always, you can create the witchs brew drink recipe sans the alcohol, just add sweetener (maple) to taste to rebalance the drink.
I’ve been getting into more nonalcoholic spirits and found a few that work wonderfully for this drink. They really recreate the experience of having an elevated cocktail (without alcohol), and not just juice.
- For replacement for the gin, Lyre’s London Dry works wonderfully
- For a replacement for sloe gin, you can use Lyre’s Italian Spritz or just not use it at all.

A Witch’s Brew to Celebrate Spooky Season
It’s a bit early to really say, but I’m already excited about this show. I think going on a challenging journey to reclaim our power and find community is something most witches can relate to. (Is the Witch’s Road going to be a new archetype in the witching world?!). Regardless of where the show goes, I’m glad it drew this witch’s brew cocktail out of me. As we head into witching season, it’s time to connect to our inner power and witchcraft lineage. And a delicious, empowered witches cocktail is perfect for the occasion! Happy spooky season, witches!
