Evergreen Gimlet

A crisp, refreshing herbal gimlet celebrating winter flavors, with rosemary, bay, grapefruit, and a tad of elderflower to cleanse away 2021 and celebrate new beginnings.

Ingredients

  • 1 large bay leaf
  • 1/4 of a slice grapefruit (optional)
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (preferably rosemary simple syrup - see note below)
  • 1 sprig rosemary (optional, if not using rosemary simple syrup)
  • 1/2-3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1.5 ounces gin
  • 1/4 ounce elderflower liqueur (optional)

Instructions

  • Tear up bay leaf, and place it with the quarter of a grapefruit slice, and rosemary simple syrup (or rosemary + simple syrup) into your cocktail shaker. Muddle the ingredients together, so that the oils of the bay leaf mix with the citrus and syrup. Them add in lime juice, gin, elderflower liqueur, and ice. Shake and strain into a coupe glass. Add a bay leaf on top for garnish, and/or rosemary sprig.

Notes

Simple Syrup is equal parts sugar to hot water. It keeps a level of consistency in sweetness from drink to drink. Simply mix equal parts of sugar and hot water, and allow to cool before use. For this recipe, I recommend pouring the hot water over rosemary (dried or fresh) and letting it steep like a tea for 5 minutes before mixing in the sugar. This allows for a fun and easy way to add nuanced and unique flavors to your concoctions.
